RINGFEDER SHRINK DISC CATEGORIZED, MAIN FUNCTION, THE ADVANTAGES OF USING
Shrink Disc Categorized, the main function, the advantages of using
The main function of a shrink disc is the safe connection of a shaft with a hub by means of friction. For example, between a drive shaft and a transmission hollow shaft. The shrink disc generates a Backlash-free connection by pressing the hub onto the shaft. This connection is mainly used to transmit torque. The shrink disc only provides the required forces and transfers no forces or moments between shaft and hub by itself. Therefore, the force flow does not pass through it. It is installed by sliding the shrink disc onto the hollow shaft and the subsequent tightening of the screws. By using conical surfaces, the inner diameter reduces, and the radial pressure is built up. The clamping forces are provided and controlled through the screws. This allows the direct compensation of the clearance between the shaft and hub, without an overload.
For many engineers in Europe, frictional connections are the preferred choice to securely connect a shaft to a hub. Frictional connections rely on a clamping force to fix a shaft in a hub. Due to ever-increasing standards in mechanical engineering, the demands on drive technology products are also growing. More compact solutions as well as higher precision in the production of the components are indispensable today. All these requirements can be fulfilled with a frictional connection (shrink disc or locking assembly). The use of a frictional connection offers even more advantages.
The advantages of using a frictional connection include shrink Disc
A frictional connection by means of a shrink disc offers a safe and backlash-free transmission of torque over the entire time of use. The shrink disc offers a secure connection, especially with changing load directions. In contrast, with a keyway connection, abrasion on the contact surfaces due to changing load directions can lead to movement between the components. This can result in damage to the keyway and the components and thus lead to system failure. A frictional connection ensures that the hub and the shaft are axially fixed. An axial displacement is not possible under normal circumstances. Furthermore, a frictional connection can also transmit a bending moment. By using frictional connections, additional machining of the shaft and hub as required for keyway connections is not necessary. Keyways also reduce the cross-section of the shaft and hub. A cylindrical shaft and hub are sufficient for a frictional connection, which considerably reduces manufacturing costs. Compared to keyway connections, frictional connections can be freely positioned turned on the shaft or hub. In the case of keyway connections, the position must be precisely defined before and the keyways must be manufactured accordingly. Frictional connections can be much shorter than comparable keyway connections with identical loads. At the same time, frictional connections can transmit a higher torque due to their large contact surfaces at the circumference.
2 part Shrink Disc & 3 part Shrink Disc
In summary, frictional connections have the following advantages over keyway connections:
Backlash-free connection between shaft and hub
Smaller cross section
Higher transmittable loads with shorter clamping length
Safe absorption of changing load directions
Axial fixation of shaft and hub and absorption of bending moments
Free positioning on the shaft and hub
No additional machining of shaft and hub necessary
Existing applications can often be upgraded without much effort.

It consists of either one or two thrust rings with tapered bores and a mating tapered inner ring. By tightening locking screws the thrust rings are drawn together compressing the inner ring and applying pressure to the outside of the hub clamping it to the shaft. Thus the shrink disc is not in the load path. The torque can be transferred in a force-locking manner on the joining surface between the shaft and the hub without an intermediate element. The following shrink disc connections are suitable for securing all types of hubs onto shafts and axles.

Two-part shrink disc: RfN 4161, RfN 4181
Two-part shrink discs are characterized by flatter cone angle and transfer the necessary torque in a similar way to a taper interference fit. The cone angle is in the range of self-locking. The compensation of the clearance is not as much as with 3 part design, so tighter tolerances for the sleeves between shaft and hub are required. To increase the pressure, sleeves are slitted for smaller sizes. The assembly operation of the 2-piece shrink disk takes longer due to the flatter cone angle, but is less sensitive to uneven assembly procedures.
